Theme of The Game
Sails of Gold is a game about an adventurer, one of the better known explorers from our history, the man that was called Christopher Columbus. He lived between 1450 and 1506, and he was a citizen of Genoa at the time, an Italian that crossed the Atlantic Ocean on four different occasions, first discovering and then colonizing in the name of the Spanish Empire.
He reached America in a time when nobody knew it even existed. The first one to do it was a Viking though, Leif Ericson, the leader of an expedition in the 11th century.
Created by Play N Go, Sails of Gold shows on its reels images of Columbus, of things like compasses or jewelry, along with those tiny ships that he used in his caravan, to cross the ocean.
Developer
Play N Go is a relatively small developer, but one which has been releasing quite a few new games lately. They are based in Sweden, and they’ve been around since 1997.
The developer has released one other exploration themed game at the same time as Sails of Gold, and that one is called Golden Caravan. They release their games for the mobile market as well, and Sails of Gold is actually an excellent example of that practice.
How To Play It
Being created with mobile players in mind, there are only a few buttons on the screen, big enough to be used on a touch screen. The ones that interest you are on the right side, the Spin button on top, the Menu below.
You use the Menu section to reach the betting area and the paytable. You pick up to 10 lines, use up to 5 coins on each one, and set the coin value up to $1. All this would allow you to wager up to $5 per line, or up to $50 total.
The graphics are pleasant, with a mix of ship, royal and tropical elements blended in. The background picture shows some kind of tropical island, sometime at sunset, with the trees barely visible. On the reels, you get symbols where only some are themed. About five get this treatment, while the others are poker cards with compass drawings behind them.
Special Features
A major feature in this game would be the one that comes from the scatter symbol, the one which has a sail ship on it. Columbus’ ship is the kind that it doesn’t matter where it appears, and which can reward you with free spins when it’s in three different locations. There is no mention of a prize being awarded as well, so I assume there are only 10 free games offered, nothing more.
On the other hand, the free spins do have some advantages over the base game rounds. I’m talking about the presence of an extra wild symbol, a Golden Ship, which only the free spins can get. The free spins can also be retriggered.
The only other feature symbol is a wild, with Columbus as its image. Land two to five Columbus wilds on an active line, from the left to the right, and you get paid between 10x and 5,000x. While appearing alone or not in the right positions, the wild is used as a substitute for others.
