Theme of The Game
The theme in Lava Loot is inspired by cavemen from the Stone Age. The game features a design that is almost as primitive as the people it shows off on its reels, but it somehow makes it work for it, and I for one enjoyed playing it.
You have two main characters on the reels, both of them important symbols, and they are probably the best looking images you will see in the game.
The dinosaurs which are used as monsters and as symbols have an appearance which makes them look like hand drawn beasts from some cave wall. There are volcanoes which are in the middle of an eruption, there are beasts, playing cards with bones or precious stones next to them, everything you could want from a game with this kind of theme.
Developer
Lava Loot was created by Novomatic, a developer that has a few dozen pokie machines on the market right now. Sometimes they’re a lot of fun, and they sport a very nice design, but that’s not always the case. They have their share of dated designs and games with few paylines.
They always seem to give away big prizes though, which appears to be a result of them also asking for large wagers in their pokies. Besides Lava Loot, the game also has titles like Book of Ra, Beetle Mania Deluxe or Big Catch.
How To Play It
There are 50 fixed paylines inside, on which you can wager anywhere between $25 and $10,000. That would correspond to a bet of $0.50 to $200 per line. The paytable values are changed automatically, so you always know how much you can win with your current bet.
The action in Lava Loot takes place near a volcano, shown in the background with smoke coming out of it, and with a couple of others doing the same thing further away. The reels get all sorts of symbols on them, but the ones you’re most likely to pay attention to have either monsters or cave people. I’ve mentioned it before, the design looks quite primitive, but I’m guessing that it’s intentional, and I for one like the end result.
Special Features
The most common feature you’re likely to find in a pokie machine these days is the wild. The wild symbol gets an image with a monster which is kept in a cage, and to take advantage of its powers you will need it on a payline which has matching symbols on it already.
The wild can only provide the missing symbol for the combo if it’s in the right position to substitute for another one. They don’t do that for scatter symbols. Wilds are also useful if you get them to appear with two or more icons on a payline, from left to right. They will award up to 1,000x in that case.
A major feature in Lava Loot is the Bonus icon, which has the picture of the volcano on it. It’s a scatter which is capable of giving away prizes when it appears in three to five random locations, paying up to 100x the bet.
10 free spins can also be triggered, by 3+ scattered Bonus symbols. The Lava Wilds are present on the reels, and they move down by one row each spin that you go through.
Once they get to the bottom, they leave the game. Until then though, expect them to be of lots of help. You get fewer scatters during free spins, only on the first and last reels, but you also need only two to get an additional 10 free games.
A random feature which appears during the base game spins, Big Wild makes the volcano erupt, with lava going across the reels from the middle (2, 3 and 4). It’s going to be a stacked wild, which can cover multiple symbols.
Maximum Payouts
The big payout of the pokie seems to come from the scatter, which offers only 100x the bet. It’s not an impressive jackpot if you look at the wagers that are involved, going up to $10,000 per spin, but you can’t help but drool when you figure out that the scatter can award $1,000,000.
Summary
I’d recommend Lava Loot any day, and despite its low payout multipliers and primitive graphics, it’s a charming pokie machine which I enjoyed trying out.
